The "Year of the Child" gold issue from the South African Mint references the 1979 International Year of the Child declared by the United Nations — but this coin was struck nearly two decades later, in 1998, almost certainly tied to the post-apartheid government's renewed emphasis on children's rights following the 1996 Constitution, which included some of the most extensive child-protection provisions of any national charter at the time.

Mintage on this issue was extremely limited, and it circulates rarely in the secondary market.
