Obverse description A finely detailed, high-relief rendition of the King Protea (Protea cynaroides), South Africa's national flower, occupies the central field, depicted in full bloom with prominently sculpted petals radiating outward from a domed, textured floret head. The bilingual circular legend 'SUID-AFRIKA' to the left and 'SOUTH AFRICA' to the right arcs around the upper periphery, while the date '1991' is inscribed in large numerals along the lower rim. The engraver's initials 'ALS' appear discreetly in the lower field beneath the flower. The overall design is executed in a naturalistic style with exceptional botanical precision characteristic of the South African Protea coin series.
