The Natura series launched in 1994 as the South African Mint's answer to a crowded bullion market — deliberately positioned against the Krugerrand by featuring wildlife rather than Paul Kruger, and targeting collectors willing to pay a premium over spot. The sable antelope appeared in the 2000 series themed around southern African antelopes. Unlike the Krugerrand's 22-karat alloy, the Natura was struck in four-nines fineness from the outset, a deliberate commercial decision to compete with the Canadian Maple Leaf on purity grounds.
Two reference numbers in Hern suggest both a proof and an uncirculated version were issued for this date.
