| Obverse description | The obverse presents a finely detailed portrait of a greater kudu bull in right-facing three-quarter profile, its magnificent spiralling horns arching dramatically upward and curving across the upper field. The animal's head and neck are rendered in high relief with naturalistic precision, emerging from a polished field against a crescent-shaped inner border. The legend SOUTH AFRICA appears integrated into a decorative ribbon-like banner encircling the upper portion of the design, flanked on both sides by an intricately engraved thorn-tree motif in low relief that frames the entire composition. The date 1999 is prominently displayed at the top of the field, and the engraver's initials ALS appear in small characters at the lower centre of the inner circle. |
