Zimbabwe's gold-backed currency history is a study in desperation and improvisation. After the hyperinflationary collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar — which reached an estimated 89.7 sextillion percent annual inflation in November 2008 — the country abandoned its own currency entirely in 2009, operating on a basket of foreign currencies for over a decade. The Mosi-Oa-Tunya coin was introduced in July 2022 as a legal-tender store of value explicitly designed to give Zimbabweans an inflation hedge that the local RTGS dollar and later ZiG could not credibly provide.
The Reserve Bank's initial release sold out within days. Coins could be used as loan collateral under RBZ regulations from launch.
