The "1 Ounce Mining" is one of several thematic bullion issues South Africa produced in the late 1990s alongside the dominant Krugerrand series. By 1999, the Krugerrand still carried the stigma of apartheid-era boycotts in certain markets, and these alternative issues gave the South African Mint a vehicle for reaching buyers who remained ideologically resistant to the Krugerrand name. KM#251 is a low-mintage piece; exact figures are elusive, but surviving populations suggest production was limited and demand modest.
