Reverse description The reverse presents a richly composed allegorical scene commemorating the centenary of conservation in South Africa. A pair of cupped human hands rises from the lower field, cradling an olive branch and supporting a landscape in which the African Big Five are prominently depicted: a lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, and Cape buffalo, all set against a silhouette of the African continent and a bare acacia tree. The weight and metal specifications 1oz Au appear in the left field. The circumferential legend reads 1894 BEWARING PROTEA CONSERVATION 1994, with the engraver's initials LL (Linda Lotriet) visible at the lower rim.
