Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Union of South Africa's Parliament, established in 1910 following the Act of Union that merged the former Boer republics and British colonies into a single self-governing dominion. By 1985, the political weight of that founding moment had become deeply complicated — the apartheid state was facing mounting international sanctions, and South African gold coins, including this issue, were the target of active boycott campaigns in the United States and Europe. Several Western governments were simultaneously debating bans on Krugerrand imports, which passed in the US later that same year.
