A traditional Mauritanian tea kettle (breiq) is depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, rendered with fine decorative detail including an ornate spout, domed lid with finial, and looped handle. The kettle is a culturally significant motif representing the tradition of Mauritanian tea ceremony. The Arabic legend 'البنك المركزي الموريتاني' (The Central Bank of Mauritania) curves along the upper border, while the Latin numeral '1' and the denomination 'OUGUIYA' appear at the lower centre flanked by stars. The Gregorian year '2017' is inscribed at the lower left, and the entire design is framed by a decorative geometric border of repeating diamond-shaped ornaments. |

Mauritania's ouguiya has the unusual distinction of being one of the few modern currencies not based on decimal subdivision — the traditional unit divides into 5 khoums, a system rooted in pre-colonial exchange practices that the country retained at independence in 1973. This bimetallic-era coin was replaced in 2018 when Mauritania redenominated its currency by a factor of ten, issuing a new ouguiya equal to ten old ones. The piece dates from the final transitional window of the old system.
