| Obverse description | A caparisoned elephant advancing to the right occupies the lower half of the field, rendered in a stylized manner with decorative trappings visible along its back. Mounted above the elephant is a rectangular cartouche bearing the Arabic letter 'Ba' (ب), representing the regnal initial of Tipu Sultan. A crescent moon symbol appears to the left of the elephant in the field. Small circular pellets are also present in the field, serving as additional decorative elements characteristic of Mysore coinage of this period. |

Tipu Sultan's coinage was part of a deliberate administrative overhaul that replaced the traditional Hindu-era calendar with a new solar calendar of his own devising — the Mauludi era — introduced around 1787. The Patan mint, one of several he operated across Mysore, struck copper falus for local circulation in a kingdom that was simultaneously fighting its fourth and final war against the British East India Company. Tipu was killed at Seringapatam in May 1799, and mint operations ceased almost immediately upon the city's fall.
