| Obverse description | Saint Mark, nimbed and vested in episcopal robes, is depicted seated on a throne to the left, raising his right hand in benediction while resting his left hand on the Gospel. To his right stands the kneeling Doge Nicolò da Ponte in ducal robes, presenting himself in a gesture of supplication; behind the Doge stands the winged Lion of Saint Mark holding a standard surmounted by a cross. The date 1581 appears in the lower exergual area. The circular legend reads S·M·VENETVS·NIC·DEPONTE·D, identifying the patron saint and the ruling Doge. |
