Reverse description The Lion of St. Mark depicted rampant to left, grasping an upright sword around whose blade a serpent is coiled, emblematic of prudence overcoming treachery. To the right stands a fortified castle, and to the left a galley under sail upon the sea, together symbolising the military and maritime power of the Serenissima. The reverse legend PRVDENTIA ET FORTITVDO encircles the design, proclaiming the twin virtues of Prudence and Fortitude as the guiding principles of the Venetian state.
