| Reverse description | The reverse bears a bold multi-line central inscription within a beaded inner circle, reading ALOYSII / CONTARENO / PRINCIPIS / MVNVS / ANNO / VII, identifying this osella as the gift of Doge Alvise Contarini in the seventh year of his reign. Surrounding the inner circle, the peripheral legend reads +SALVS·AN·1682·ET·AB·VRBE·CONDITA·1262, recording both the Christian year 1682 and the year 1262 reckoned from the foundation of Venice. The lettering is well-struck and deeply engraved in the characteristic Venetian humanist capital style. The field within the inner circle is entirely occupied by the dedicatory text, with no pictorial devices. |
