Kristoffer of Bavaria ruled Sweden as an absentee king for much of his reign, spending considerable time managing his simultaneous kingships of Denmark and Norway under the Kalmar Union. Swedish coinage of his reign was struck at Åbo — present-day Turku in Finland — reflecting both the administrative reach of the Union into Swedish-controlled Finland and the practical need for regional minting to serve Baltic trade. He died in 1448 without an heir, collapsing the personal union and triggering a succession crisis that would define Scandinavian politics for decades.
