Friedrich Casimir Kettler ruled Courland and Semigallia from 1682 until his death in 1698, and his reign was defined largely by financial strain and an increasingly assertive Polish-Lithuanian suzerainty pressing down on ducal autonomy. The ort — a denomination equal to a quarter thaler — was a workhorse of Baltic trade coinage, and Mitau's output in the 1690s reflects the duchy's effort to maintain a credible monetary presence despite dwindling resources.

Courland's minting activity under Friedrich Casimir was intermittent and relatively low in volume, which is why survivors in any presentable condition attract consistent collector attention. The Mitau mint itself operated with interruptions throughout this decade.
