1 Öre - Sigismund of Poland Type I

Sigismund III Vasa was king of both Poland and Sweden simultaneously when this coin was struck — a dynastic union that lasted only until 1599, when the Swedish Riksdag formally deposed him in absentia for his Catholic faith and refusal to govern from Stockholm. His Swedish coinage was therefore minted across fewer than six years, and issues from 1593 represent the very opening of that contested reign.

The Type I designation distinguishes this from later die modifications introduced as the Vasa mint adjusted production. Swedish öre coinage of this period was struck at multiple facilities with inconsistent quality control, and planchet preparation was often irregular.
