Sigismund III Vasa held the Swedish throne for barely four years before his Protestant nobility, led by his uncle Duke Charles, forced him out. Already King of Poland when he inherited Sweden in 1592, his Catholicism made him unacceptable to a Lutheran kingdom, and these small silver öre were struck during the entire span of that doomed reign. The Stockholm mint produced several die variants across these years — the Kopicki references here spanning five distinct catalogue numbers — reflecting continuous output during a reign that was politically unstable from its first months.
Sigismund never returned after his defeat at Stångebro in 1598.
