1 Onza 'Libertad'

The Libertad series launched in 1982 as Mexico's answer to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf — a bullion coin designed to compete in international silver markets rather than circulate domestically. Unlike most sovereign bullion programs, the Mexican Mint has never published official mintage figures for the series, a policy that has created genuine scarcity uncertainty and driven collector premiums well above spot on certain years.

The 2000 issue is particularly noted among Libertad collectors as the first year struck under new security and die preparation standards introduced at the Casa de Moneda's Tlalpan facility. Some years in the 2000s, particularly 2004 and 2005, are now confirmed low-mintage dates based on secondary market evidence.
