Mexico launched the Libertad series in 1982 as a direct response to the peso crisis that year, when a catastrophic devaluation — the peso lost roughly 70% of its value between February and December — destroyed confidence in paper currency. The silver Libertad was conceived not as circulating coinage but as a bullion vehicle, giving Mexican citizens a hard-asset alternative denominated outside the collapsing monetary system.
The five KM sub-varieties across this date range reflect incremental changes to the reverse design made in 1996, but also document earlier adjustments to the coat of arms used on the obverse — Mexico updated its official escudo in 1968 and again later, and the mint methodically carried those changes through its bullion issues. The Casa de Moneda de México, operating continuously since 1535, struck all pieces in this series.
