Carlo di Borbone — later Carlos III of Spain — ruled Sicily from Madrid's perspective as a stepping stone, and his Sicilian coinage reflects the administrative distance. The oncia was Sicily's principal gold denomination, a unit of account made physical, and its production under Carlo tracked closely with the island's chronic fiscal instability under Spanish Bourbon management. When Carlo departed for Spain in 1759 to claim the throne, his Sicilian monetary series ended abruptly, making the later dates within this 1750–1757 window noticeably scarcer than earlier strikes.
