Ferdinand II came to the Leonese throne in 1157 when his father Alfonso VII partitioned his kingdom, splitting Castile to his brother Sancho III. This obol belongs to Ferdinand's earliest regnant coinage, produced in the narrow window before he consolidated monetary policy and broadened the types struck in his name. The knight type specifically reflects the persistent Leonese need to fund frontier military activity against both Almohad pressure from the south and ongoing friction with Portugal — Ferdinand fought two wars with Afonso Henriques during this decade.
