| Beschrijving keerzijde | The central field presents a composite design commemorating the 450th anniversary of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. At left, a representation of the university's historic seal or coat of arms is depicted in relief, while at right stands a detailed view of the Antigua Casona de la UNMSM, the institution's historic colonial building rendered in perspective. In the lower portion of the field, the stylized numeral 450 and the word Años appear prominently, with the commemorative dates 1551-2001 inscribed below. The legend UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL MAYOR DE SAN MARCOS curves along the upper border, with DECANA DE AMÉRICA along the left periphery. A serrated or stepped decorative border frames the design. |

San Marcos, founded in Lima in 1551, is the oldest continuously operating university in the Americas — predating Harvard by 85 years. This issue belongs to Peru's long-running commemorative sol program, which the Banco Central de Reserva used through the late 1990s and early 2000s to produce a series of .925 silver pieces honoring national institutions, each struck in relatively modest quantities for the collector market rather than circulation.
