Obverse description The national coat of arms of Peru occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three quarters bearing a vicuña, a cinchona tree, and a cornucopia overflowing with gold coins, symbolising the animal, vegetable, and mineral wealth of the republic. The shield is flanked by laurel and palm branches tied at the base. The circular legend BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERU runs along the upper periphery, while the date appears at the lower margin. The inscription JUAN PABLO VISCARDO Y GUZMAN 1748-1998 is also present, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the birth of the independence precursor.

Reverse description A right-facing portrait bust of Juan Pablo Viscardo y Guzmán, the Jesuit priest and intellectual precursor of South American independence, dominates the central field in high relief. The effigy is rendered in a classical style consistent with late 18th-century portraiture. The legend BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERU arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination UN NUEVO SOL and the date 1998 appear in the lower field. The fineness and weight specifications PLATA .925 33.625 gr are inscribed within the design, consistent with standard proof commemorative practice.
