Issued as part of the Banco Central's ongoing commemorative program celebrating Peruvian scientific and natural heritage, this piece honors the Sociedad Geológica del Perú, founded in 1924 — one of the oldest geological societies in South America. Peru's geological significance is hard to overstate: the Andes represent one of the most actively studied orogenic belts on earth, and the society's work cataloguing mineral deposits directly shaped the country's 20th-century mining economy.
