1 Nuevo Sol Chullpas of Sillustani

Sillustani, on the shores of Lake Umayo near Puno, is among the most archaeologically significant funerary sites in the Andes — its chullpas, cylindrical burial towers built by the Qulla people before Inca conquest, some exceeding twelve meters in height. The Inca later adopted and elaborated the form. Peru's Riquezas Arquitectónicas series, of which this is one issue, ran across multiple years highlighting pre-Columbian and colonial monuments that rarely appear on circulating coinage.

The towers at Sillustani were constructed without mortar, the stones fitted by a technique still not fully understood.
