Peru's 1991 monetary reform replaced the catastrophically devalued inti with the nuevo sol at a rate of one million to one — a ratio that required no exaggeration to explain the preceding decade of hyperinflation, which had peaked at over 7,000% annually in 1990. This 1997 gold issue was struck as a collector piece, not a circulating coin, and was part of a broader series the BCRP produced throughout the 1990s to mark the stabilization achieved under the Fujimori-era economic restructuring.
