Issued as part of Peru's ongoing commemorative silver program, this piece honors the German naturalist whose 1799–1804 expedition through South America produced the most comprehensive scientific survey of the continent to that point. Humboldt spent time in what is now Peru studying the cold Pacific current that still bears his name, and his observations on altitude, magnetism, and climate laid groundwork that Darwin later acknowledged as foundational to his own thinking.
