Peru introduced the nuevo sol in 1991 as part of a currency reform designed to halt the catastrophic hyperinflation that had rendered the inti effectively worthless — at its worst, the inti had lost so much value that the conversion rate was set at one million intis to one nuevo sol. This type, the first design iteration without the braille accessibility feature added in later issues, circulated through a period of relative monetary stabilization under successive governments still managing the economic fallout from the 1980s crisis.
