Peru's nuevo sol was introduced in 1991 as part of a drastic monetary reform intended to replace the inti, which had been destroyed by hyperinflation running at over 7,000% annually by 1990. The braille dots added to this coin — among the earliest Latin American circulating coins to incorporate tactile accessibility features — were included from the first year of issue, a deliberate policy decision rather than a later retrofit.
