Struck in the name of Francis and Mary during their brief joint reign over Scotland, this issue dates to the period when Mary Queen of Scots was simultaneously Queen of France through her marriage to Francis II — a dynastic union that made Scotland technically aligned with France against England. The "Nonsunt" type takes its name from the Latin inscription, a detail that has puzzled collectors for generations given its grammatical irregularity.
Francis died in December 1560, ending the Franco-Scottish royal union after barely two years.
