Obverse description Crowned, armored figure of Philip II stands full-length within a large sailing vessel, facing forward and holding a sword upright in the right hand and a shield bearing the quartered arms of Spain in the left. The ship's hull is rendered with elaborate rigging, masts, and decorative heraldic shields on the forecastle and stern. A crowned lion passant appears at each end of the vessel, and the waves of the sea fill the lower field in a stylized pattern. A small crowned 'P' mint-initial appears above the king's head in the upper field. The Latin legend runs around the entire obverse within a beaded border.
