| Obverse description | King Richard II depicted standing full-length within a large fighting ship (nef), facing forward, wearing a crown and armour, holding a drawn sword in his right hand and a quartered shield of England and France in his left. The ship is shown with a decorated hull, raised forecastle and sterncastle, with rigging and a flag visible above. The field surrounding the ship displays a tightly beaded inner circle, with the royal legend inscribed between two beaded borders in Gothic lettering running around the full circumference of the coin. The design follows the established noble tradition introduced by Edward III, with characteristic late 14th-century hammered workmanship. |
