Obverse description King Richard II depicted full-length and facing, standing erect within a ship with a high decorated hull, holding an upraised sword in his right hand and a heraldic shield quartered with the arms of England and France in his left. The rigging and planking of the vessel are rendered in fine detail characteristic of late 14th-century hammered gold coinage. A trefoil mintmark appears below the shield, serving as a type identifier. The entire composition is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the royal legend in Gothic uncial lettering arranged around the periphery.
