The Noble was introduced by the Isle of Man in 1983 as one of the first bullion coins designed to compete directly with the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf. Pobjoy Mint, based in Surrey, has struck Manx coinage under contract since 1972 and holds an unusually long-running private minting relationship with the island's treasury. The Raphael Maklouf portrait — the second decimal effigy of Elizabeth II — was adopted across Commonwealth coinage in 1985 and remained standard until 1998.
The .9999 fineness distinguishes the Noble from many contemporaries; the original 1983 issue was only .9995.
