Reverse description A large floriated cross with a central crowned letter E occupies the field, with crowned lions passant guardant in each angle of the cross. The entire design is set within a polylobe (cusped) border, with trefoils in the spandrels between the lobes. The reverse legend, taken from the Gospel of Luke, runs continuously around the periphery in Lombardic script, a standard feature of the English noble series referencing divine protection of the sovereign.
