The Post-Treaty noble takes its name from the Treaty of Brétigny (1360), which briefly required Edward III to renounce his claim to the French throne — a claim that had been explicitly advertised on English coinage since 1340. When the treaty collapsed and Edward reasserted his French title in 1369, the coinage was updated accordingly. This piece belongs to that resumed series, struck during the final, politically turbulent years of his reign as English military fortunes in France deteriorated sharply.
By 1377, the year of Edward's death, the Black Prince was already gone and the kingdom effectively governed by factions. Coins of this sub-series are distinguished from Treaty period issues by the reappearance of the French royal style in the inscription.
