Obverse description King Edward III depicted full-length, standing facing within a large sailing ship, armed with a drawn sword in his right hand and a heraldic shield bearing the quartered arms of England and France in his left. A flag or streamer flies from the stern of the vessel. The ship's hull is richly decorated with alternating lions and lis. The royal effigy is rendered in the highly stylized Gothic manner characteristic of mid-14th-century English hammered gold coinage. The peripheral legend, struck in uncial Latin characters, runs continuously around the tressure of the coin.
