| Obverse description | King Edward III depicted in half-length effigy standing within a ship, facing the viewer, crowned and robed, holding an upright sword in his right hand and a heraldic shield in his left. The stern of the vessel lacks a flag, and a voided quatrefoil device appears over the sail. The hull of the ship is rendered with characteristic Gothic detail, and the surrounding field is filled with the circular obverse legend in Lombardic/uncial lettering. The design exemplifies the finest tradition of English Gothic hammered gold coinage. |
