Korea's 1886 pattern coinage was produced as the Joseon court explored modernized machine-struck currency following the country's forced opening to foreign trade in 1876. This piece was almost certainly struck in Japan — likely at the Osaka Mint — which had been contracted to assist Korea in establishing a modern monetary system during the early Gojong reform period. The Pn14 designation confirms pattern status; these were never authorized for circulation.
