The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan replaced the earlier 1 Ngultrum coins with this paper issue, a move driven by the practical difficulty of maintaining metal coinage supplies across the kingdom's challenging terrain. The denomination sat at the lowest end of Bhutanese paper currency and saw heavy everyday use, which makes clean surviving examples harder to find than the low face value might suggest.
August Osterrieth, a Frankfurt security printer with a long history of producing small-nation currency, handled the entire print run.
