Yad Vashem, established by Knesset legislation in 1953, was created partly in response to survivor testimony that the destruction of European Jewry had gone largely undocumented during the war itself. The institution became the statutory guardian of that record. This coin was issued as part of Israel's 65th Independence Day series, a program that has consistently used the commemorative sheqel to mark institutions and figures of national and historical significance rather than military or political events alone.
