Issued to mark Israel's 41st Independence Day, this coin belongs to a long-running commemorative series in which each year's theme is chosen by public competition. "The Promised Land" as a theme in 1989 carried particular weight — the late 1980s saw the beginning of mass Soviet Jewish immigration, a demographic wave that would bring roughly one million new citizens to Israel within a decade and fundamentally reshape the country.
