The Isle of Man's decimal coinage was introduced in 1971 alongside the UK's own decimalization, but the Manx Treasury moved aggressively into precious metal collector strikes almost immediately — an unusual posture for a jurisdiction of its size. The 1975 platinum strikes were produced in extremely limited quantities and occupy an odd commercial niche: priced well beyond face value at issue yet denominated as circulating coinage, they were never intended for a till.
Platinum at .950 fineness for a one-penny denomination is a genuinely eccentric choice, one that reflects the Isle of Man's willingness to exploit its fiscal autonomy from Westminster in ways the Royal Mint would never have attempted.
