| Reverse description | The central device, designed by Christopher Ironside, depicts a crowned portcullis with chains, a heraldic symbol long associated with the Palace of Westminster and the British Crown. The portcullis is shown with its characteristic vertical bars and downward-pointing spikes, suspended by two chains from a Tudor-style royal crown that surmounts it. The numeral 1 appears in the lower field beneath the portcullis. The inscription NEW PENNY arcs around the upper portion of the coin in widely spaced letters, while a continuous border of raised beads frames the entire design. |
