Issued to mark the Republic of China's 50th anniversary — calculated from the 1911 Xinhai Revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty — this coin was struck while the government in Taipei still formally claimed sovereignty over the mainland, a position that shaped every aspect of official commemoration during this period. The ROC had retreated to Taiwan only twelve years earlier following the Communist victory in the civil war.
Silver coinage of this type was not intended for general circulation; the denomination was largely symbolic given the New Taiwan Dollar's everyday purchasing context in 1961.
