Suleyman I had been sultan for less than a year when this piece was struck, having ascended the Ottoman throne in September 1520 following Selim I's death. Algiers had come under nominal Ottoman suzerainty in 1516 when Hayreddin Barbarossa ceded the city to Selim, but the Regency's early coinage operated with considerable local autonomy — the connection to Istanbul more political than administrative.
Album 1320 covers a series notoriously difficult to attribute precisely, as die-cutting in Algiers during this period was inconsistent and mint control loose.
