Additional information

John II of Cleves struck this small silver piece during a reign defined more by diplomacy than by military ambition — his careful maneuvering between the competing pressures of the Holy Roman Empire and the Burgundian Netherlands kept the duchy intact through decades of regional instability. The muter denomination itself was among the lowest silver issues circulating in the lower Rhine region at the turn of the sixteenth century, functioning as everyday small change in a territory whose economic life ran on river trade along the Rhine.

Noss catalogued this type with careful attention to die variation across the series.
