The MUSE — Monnaie à Usage Solidaire et Écologique — was one of several dozen complementary currencies that proliferated in France during the early 2010s, partly inspired by the older Aquitaine-based SOL and the longer-running German Regiogeld experiments. Trélazé, a former slate-quarrying commune east of Angers, hosted the issuing association. These notes circulate only within a closed network of participating local businesses and are redeemable at par against euros through member accounts, not through any banking institution.
The validity stamp is the critical security element — without periodic re-stamping, the note loses acceptance within the network, a design choice intended to discourage hoarding and accelerate local velocity of exchange.
