Cesare d'Este's reign began under a cloud: when Alfonso II died without legitimate heirs in 1597, Pope Clement VIII refused to recognize Cesare's succession and seized Ferrara, forcing the Este court to retreat permanently to Modena. The duchy's coinage from this period reflects a scramble to assert legitimate authority from a diminished capital, with small billon issues like this muraiola serving the everyday transactions of a court that had just lost its grandest city.
