Reading top-to-bottom then right-to-left, the legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), identifying the coin as currency of the Sangpyeong-tongbo series issued under the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) Bureau. The characters 常 (top) and 平 (bottom) are read vertically, while 通 (right) and 寶 (left) complete the four-character inscription. The field is plain, with no additional decorative elements.
